poem | beauty (noun)

you say you're not pretty
but how would you know
when you’ve only ever seen
what the mirror shows? and
I don’t know who put the idea
in your head
that beauty starts with
the length of your leg
but to call that a lie is long overdue, and
you’re too smart to go down that well-travelled route.

and yes I know it's true, that
if you search the definition of beauty
you will find that it states:
“a combination of aesthetic qualities,
such as colour, form or shape.”
but this too is riddled with inaccuracies,
don't take it to the grave with you,
because beauty is not found in superficial characteristics that can be altered or changed.
true beauty is find in how you move through the world,
the choice you make, to
touch people with venom or grace.
