if I wrote you a love letter
would you read it once through
hearing me read it
sounding just like I do?
would you fold it up small
and put it in a box
with other prized possessions
labelled “things I thought I dreamed up?”
would you leave it on your desk
and never read it at all
eventually throwing it away
when you clean your room in fall?
would you hold it tightly to your chest
when you see it in the mail
seeing my handwriting on the front
knowing it was from me, without fail?
I guess it doesn’t really matter
when you get my letter
if that’s what you do,
because first I have to find the nerve
to write the letter I’ll send to you.
